Archery Day 5 Review: Gold rush for British archers
Lee Hwa-sook displays her gold medal.

(BEIJING, September 13)  Danielle Brown and John Stubbs added to Great Britain's medal tally by striking gold at the Olympic Green Archery Field on Saturday, September 13.

Women's Individual Recurve - Standing

Lee Hwa-sook of the Republic of Korea claimed gold after beating China's Gao Fangxia 103-92.

Lee faltered in the first end with a weak start, but began to show her class from the second end onwards. She went on to outscore Gao in all four ends. Gao took home the silver medal.

Lindsey Carmichael of the United States claimed bronze by edging out her Polish opponent Malgorzata Olejnik 105-101.

Carmichael made a weak start, losing the first two ends, but came back with a strong performance in the last two ends to clinch the bronze.

Women's Individual Compound - Open

Top seed and world record holder Danielle Brown lived up to her top billing, winning gold in a one-sided final against Japan's Kamiya Chieko.

Brown began in style hitting the bull's eye with her first two arrows (getting ten points each). She kept the pressure on her opponent throughout the match, not giving Kamiya an opportunity to make a comeback.

In the bronze medal match, Britain's Mel Clarke walked away with the bronze medal after beating her Turkish opponent Gulbin Su 113-109. Clarke dominated the match from the start, outscoring Su in three out of the four ends.

Women's Individual Recurve - W1/W2

Turkey's Gizem Girismen edged out China's Fu Hongzhi 91-85 to win the gold medal in the Women's Individual Recurve - W1/W2 category.

Both archers started tentatively, with Fu taking an early lead. However, she failed to remain consistent and forfeited the lead to the Turkish, who ended strongly. Fu took home the silver medal.

Backed by the home crowd, China's Xiao Yanhong beat Japan's Nakanishi Aya 98-84, to claim the bronze medal.

Xiao began well, taking advantage of her Japanese opponent's errors to seal a clinical win.

Men's Individual Compound - Open

Top seed John Stubbs showed why he was a favorite by winning the gold medal in the Men's Individual Compound - Open category.

Stubbs beat his Italian opponent Alberto Simonelli 116-111. Stubbs has been in sublime form from the start of the Beijing 2008 Games, finishing in first place in the ranking round and growing stronger with every performance.

Switzerland's Philippe Horner clinched bronze by outplaying his American opponent T. J. Pemberton 115-111.

Horner applied pressure from the start, hitting the bull's eye on eight occasions (scoring ten points each).
